Uncommon Sources of Talent

It’s a challenging market for finding top talent. There are more open jobs today than job seekers, so where do you find your next employees? Are you exploring all avenues for talent, or are you returning to the same well repeatedly? Consider sources of talent that others may be missing. Let’s take a closer look.

Older Workers

Unfortunately, ageism in the U.S. workforce is common, but it doesn’t need to be that way. For many years, younger workers were chosen over their older counterparts due to the ability to pay less or the perception of seasoned workers being overqualified. But tapping into the market of employees over 40 will give you an advantage in the marketplace as you gain many years of experience in your team.

Second Chance Hires

Consider working with a second chance program to hire individuals with backgrounds that conventional companies often overlook. Second chance programs help people with criminal records find employment in their areas. These individuals have tons of talent but are frequently unable to find someone willing to take a chance on them. In 2017, the grocery chain Kroger implemented a second chance hiring program. After 18 months, the retention rate among these employees was 83%, far exceeding average retention rates for the industry.

New Graduates

Another market to tap into is recent graduates. And often, you can find that talent before they’re even on the job market. Partner with colleges, universities, or trade schools in your field to create work education programs. This is an excellent way to source great employees even before they graduate. They’ll never enter the job market if you can provide an offer right after graduation.

Candidates Returning after Long Gaps

Significant job gaps on a resume were considered a red flag for a long time. But that’s all changed in recent years. Someone who has been out of the workforce, often to care for family, is an excellent resource for talent. For example, stay-at-home moms with previous experience in your field can be trained to quickly improve their skills and be up to speed in the workplace.
