Using LinkedIn To Enhance Your Career

LinkedInLinkedIn, like any online tool, is only as good as the information you provide on it. Filling out a basic online profile and letting it sit without engaging with the community does not position your information properly so it can be found by hiring managers on the site. LinkedIn needs active engagement to work properly. Here are some ways you can use LinkedIn to enhance your career:

  1. Endorse connections. You have probably noticed the emails you get regularly that indicate your skills have been endorsed by a variety of your connections. This is an important way to gain momentum with your page. Skills are ranked within searches; so if someone finds your information, they will be more likely to contact you. Endorse others to encourage them to endorse your skills in return.
  2. Join groups. Another way to be seen by hiring managers is to participate in groups. Join groups for your industry and your area. However, the key is to be active within that online community. Answer others’ questions, create informative content, and position yourself as a subject matter expert. Hiring managers who are also a part of these groups will see your activity as a positive while they’re considering candidates.
  3. Follow companies. Another method to make sure that hiring managers see your information is to follow companies on the site. Conduct some research on businesses that embody the goals that you have for your career. Follow those companies, like their status updates, and maintain some level of professional contact.
  4. Make and get recommendations. Finally, be sure to get and give recommendations on the site. Your LinkedIn recommendations may replace formal references or at least validate additional information provided. A hiring manager isn’t likely to review a profile for someone who doesn’t have any recommendations on the site.
