What is Temp to Hire?

Hiring can be an expensive proposition. Not only do you need to handle the costs of advertising and pre-screening but also the salary, benefits, and taxes for each employee. A bad hire can be even more expensive. If someone doesn’t work out you need to start the process over again. Temp to hire staffing can be a great solution. Before you work with your local staffing agency it is important to understand the terms of any potential agreement. If you’re interested in hiring someone on a temp to hire basis, what does that mean exactly? Read more for a quick rundown of temp to hire and what it means for your business.

  • The hiring process. The recruiters will be responsible for all of the pre-employment vetting of the candidates. This means they handle the advertising and resume screening. They contact candidates to discuss the opportunity. They conduct skills evaluations and any pre-screening required by your organization which may include drug testing and background checks. Once they have selected several candidates they submit them for your review and schedule interviews. You will only need to meet with a handful of qualified candidates before making your decision.
  • Probationary period. After you select a candidate they will work for your organization on a temp to hire basis. This time frame may differ depending on your agreement with the staffing service but the most common is 90 days. During this time you will work directly with the employee to see how they handle the job duties and monitor their performance. Throughout this time you will be billed by the staffing company for the employee which will cover all of the necessary fees associated with employment.
  • Evaluating temporary employees. An essential component of this process is to maintain contact with your staffing provider to offer feedback on the candidate. Recruiters will contact you to check on performance and attendance. If you have concerns, this is the perfect time to bring them up. Also, don’t be afraid to offer positive feedback.
  • The transition to perm employment. After the probation, if you are satisfied with the temporary employee’s work, you can convert them to your company’s payroll. Once you have met the terms of the staffing company’s temp to hire agreement, the employee can be hired without any additional fees. You may elect to hire someone before their 90 days is complete in which case your recruiter may require a buy-out fee based on the number of hours the employee worked. If you are not satisfied with the employee at any time within the probationary period, discuss this with your representative who can end the employee’s assignment and find a replacement with no additional cost.
