Dear Recent College Graduates: Don’t Make These Mistakes!

Now that school is done and you’re ready to start your career, you may be eager and ready to hit the job market. Maybe you’ve completed an internship or summer job along the way, and you feel invincible. What economy struggles? Who says there’s a slow job market?

Hold on there, recent grads!

The economy is definitely showing some signs of improvement, but there are still some critical mistakes that college grads make when venturing into the job market. Here are three tips to help you use your eagerness and enthusiasm to land your next job….and not leave you searching aimlessly:

  1. Keep all your communications professional. Take a look at your email address. Is it professional? You may be a big Cowboys fan, but that doesn’t necessarily mean your email address should reflect that. And if potential employers will be calling you on your cell phone, make sure your voicemail message is short and professional. First impressions matter!
  2. Build your network. You may feel fresh and ready to tackle the world (and that’s a great way to be!), but you still have to think wisely about your career. Have you set up a LinkedIn profile? Many college graduates have neglected this online social media profile, but it’s essential to your career, and a great way to start networking. Connect with professors, fellow students, and any people you may have worked with during an internship or summer job. Once you’ve set up your profile, get out and go to professional networking events in your area. Meet other like-minded professionals and share your experiences and goals. It may just help you land your first real job!
  3. Stay level-headed. Recent college grads can sometimes start off with some unrealistic expectations. Keep a level head and be realistic when searching for your first professional opportunity. It’s a tough market, and you may be unproven…for now. Build up your skills and experience, and your paycheck will come.
