Are you able to provide the things job seekers are looking for when they apply for a job with your business? If you aren’t able to give applicants what they need they will likely not accept your job and move on to another company. Here are the five things job seekers want most and suggestions to ensure you can offer them.
- Compensation. Costs have gone up, but salaries have stayed about the same over the last several years. In some instances they have even gone down. Because of the saturation of the job market many companies were able to pay less for jobs that had higher salaries before the recession. This will eventually create a void in the employment market. Offer fair and reasonable compensation based on salary expectation and your budget.
- Benefits. Offering a health plan is only a small portion of the benefits employees are looking for. Do you offer long and short term disability in case of an unforeseen situation? Do you offer dental, vision, or additional coverage? Do you offer 401K with or without a company match? Do you offer a flexible spending plan where employees can take advantage of nontaxed money for medical expenses? Consider what you can provide and create an attractive package.
- Advancement. It is rare to find an individual who does not want to grow within a company. If an employee feels like there is no possibility for upward movement within an organization they will quickly begin looking for their next chance. Let candidates know what the future opportunities are with your company.
- Work Life Balance. Everyone, no matter what their personal situation, wants to know that their lives are as important as the company’s bottom line. Employees want to be comfortable leaving work at work and enjoying their time at home. Offering flexible time off or special summer hours such as four 10 hour work days is highly desirable. Providing a good vacation package will also help an employee decide to work with you.
- Appreciation. Finally, employees like to know they are important; not just a cog in the machine. They like to know that the work they do is appreciated by their managers and they are wanted in the company. If they feel like they are expendable they are less likely to stay motivated. Provide positive reinforcement. Take an interest in them as individuals.
