Underqualified? Here’s How to Land Your Dream Job Anyway

Should you apply for jobs you’re not qualified for? The conventional answer is no but what if that isn’t always true? Every time you look through job postings you second guess yourself or your skills but that doesn’t mean that you aren’t capable of handling the job that you really want. If you find yourself reading a job description over and over again hoping you could do that work it might be time to apply anyway. Here are a few ways to land your dream job by applying even when you feel underqualified.

  1. Stand out from your competition. You may not have the impressive resume with the same level of experience as your competitors but you can make your information stand out. Pay special attention to the cover letter. Start by explaining who you are and why you have a passion for this particular job. Engage the reader and make them believe that if they don’t contact you right away they are missing out on an opportunity.
  2. Make your strengths transferable. Are there specific skills that appear non-negotiable for this job? Sometimes companies put in a laundry list of duties to try and weed out candidates so they can focus only on those with experience. Instead of concentrating on experience, demonstrate your transferable skills. How fast have you learned new things in the past? How does your previous experience relate to what they are looking for?
  3. Demonstrate how you’ve succeeded. The best way to show a company that you have what it takes to do the job they need is to show them that you can. Demonstrate your accomplishments in your last job. If what you’ve done in the past is unrelated to this job take some time to go the extra mile and present something that can show them what you do know and what you’re willing to learn. For example, create a power point presentation based on the job description and your research of the company.
  4. Come with a stellar referral. The old saying goes, “It isn’t what you know but who you know.” Never has that been more true than when you’re on a job search. Get a personal reference from someone who can speak highly of your experience, your professionalism, and your success. Bonus points if you know someone who already has a connection with the hiring company. Check LinkedIn to see if you have anyone who is a first or second degree connection with the decision maker.
