Interview Prep: Have Your Own Questions Ready

Interviews can be intimidating, but they don’t have to be. An interview should feel like a conversation, not an interrogation, so it’s helpful to prepare ahead of time. Don’t forget to come with your own questions for the employer to help you get a good feeling about the company and your interest in their work. Here are some great questions you can ask in your next interview.

What Are Your Expectations for My First Month on the Job?

You want to show that you’re ready to get to work. While you do have to go through the company’s training, you also want them to know you’re ready to hit the ground running. You will demonstrate that you’re a self-starter while still gaining insight into how the company handles its onboarding process.

How Do You Measure the Success of Your Employees?

You also want to know how the company determines success in their business. Is it related to performance reviews, profits, or other measurables? These things will give you an idea if the company culture is compatible with your work style. You may also get some insight into the people you’ll be working with and the company as a whole.

What Do You Like Most About Your Job?

A great way to break the ice with your interviewer and learn a lot about the company is by asking this simple question. How they answer will tell you a lot about what you like most about their job. It will also give them a chance to speak off the cuff without having a heavily rehearsed answer and give you some added information about the company.

What Are the Long-Term Plans for the Company?

Employers want to know that new hires are dedicated and interested in long-term careers with their organization. You want to show that you desire to grow with the company, not just use it as a stepping stone. Ask them about the long-term goals and the role you can play to help them achieve those.
