Hiring Nightmare to Avoid: Poor Onboarding

It is a startling statistic to hear that 22% of new employees leave within 45 days at a job. In fact, 4% of them leave after an awful and apparently unredeemable experience on their very first day. Businesses know that stellar employees are an investment but often they allow the new team members to start the first day with little to no oversight and expect them to succeed, especially if they have previous experience. There is more to hiring the right people than meets the eye. Here are four ways you can help the onboarding process and improve your retention.

  1. Talk to your current staff. Before your new team member starts, you should communicate with your current staff to let them know what to expect. If they weren’t introduced during the interview process, tell them a little about the new employee’s background and experience.  On the first day of the job spend some time facilitating introductions throughout the company so your newest hire begins to feel comfortable with their teammates and surroundings.
  2. Assign a mentor. A great way to integrate your new employee into the team is to assign a mentor who can help them learn the ropes. Choose an employee whose role is most similar or who has the most experience with training. The mentor can do more than simply train the employee on the job. They can be available to show them where things are in the office, take them out for lunch, and provide answers to questions about the company.
  3. Teach them about your company culture. There is more to a new job than the duties that need to be performed. Corporate culture is equally as important. Spend some time training your new employee on the core values of your company, how individuals enjoy their jobs, your mission, and what added benefits you offer.
  4. Give feedback frequently. While a 90 day review is essential it is equally as important to share feedback along the way. Provide gentle corrections on issues that need improvement and be sure to provide positive reinforcement when you see good work. You should have a trust level with your new employee to perform their duties so give them space but monitor their work.
