Increase Productivity When Working (Temporarily) from Home

Have you been working from home during the pandemic? While there is an end in sight, some people are still working remotely until there’s a little more normalcy. Even if you’re anxiously awaiting a day when you can return to an office, you can’t let your productivity falter while the finish line is not too far away. Here are a few ways you can increase productivity when you’re working from home temporarily.

Establish Your Priorities

Just like in the office, it’s important to prioritize your day. The myth of multitasking has become a major issue for many people, and the truth is our brains are not designed to handle more than one task at a time. What you do need to focus on is prioritization. Each week, look at the tasks you need to accomplish and rank them in order of importance. Each day, review your list and create your daily tasks to make the most of your schedule.

Set Boundaries

When working from home, boundaries are essential, and they apply to your employer and your family equally. Be sure to communicate your boundaries with your manager. For example, just because you can access your email after 5 o’clock doesn’t mean you should, so be clear that any requests that come in after the close of business will be addressed the next morning. For your family, especially if you have a spouse working from home or children doing school from home as well, be sure that you create a workspace where you’re not to be disturbed when accomplishing important tasks.

Focus on Communication

Another key component to successfully working from home is communication. Overcommunication may be key. Since your manager can’t casually observe what you’re doing during each workday, it’s your responsibility to keep them informed about where you are with your projects. Of course, give them an update in meetings and shoot them an email any time you have a question or let them know where you are with a project. If your company uses a collaborative tool, such as Slack, you can utilize that platform to make regular updates.

Take Time For Yourself

Your work/life balance is as important when you’re working from home as it is when you went into an office. Be sure to take time for yourself. Take breaks throughout the day, just like you would have gotten up from your desk. Don’t eat your lunch in front of the computer. And when the workday is done, shut down your computer and don’t think of it again until the next day.
