Don’t Hire Blind: The Importance of Vetting IT Job Candidates

When you’re in charge of hiring talent for your IT department, do you enter the situation blind? With dozens of resumes and interviews, how do you choose the right person for the job beyond a gut feeling about them? The truth is, the proper vetting will be an important component to hiring top IT talent for your department. And without the tools to give you the best chance, you may find yourself with a less than pleasant employee experience. Here are some of the reasons you should vet your IT candidates before making an offer and how to solve problems before they happen.

Reference checking.

So many companies don’t actively engage with the reference checking process. It can be frustrating when calling a company only results in the verification of dates of employment, but we owe it to ourselves, our companies, and our employees to do a more thorough job. Ask the candidate for direct phone numbers from previous managers or co-workers. And don’t email them, call them.

Social media review.

You have to have extreme caution when reviewing each candidate’s online presence. Anything public on social media will come up on a search, but is it really okay to use this information for your hiring criteria? There is still a legal gray area when it comes to what you can and can’t do in terms of hiring decisions when you Google someone or review their social media. The best bet is to get to know someone on LinkedIn first.

Proper background checking protocol.

It is also important to note that when you decide to run a background check it can’t be done haphazardly. If you were to run a background check on one candidate and not another, it is considered discriminatory. However, if you do think a background check will be helpful to vet your potential IT candidates, you can establish a policy across the board to run the check for every candidate who has made it into final consideration.

Work with a recruiter.

Vetting candidates is nearly a full-time job, so you don’t have to spend your time and resources on doing it. Working with a staffing partner can give you access to the tools you need and an expert to complete the process for you. You need to focus on running your business, so why not let an experienced recruiter submit pre-qualified resumes to you and handle the vetting process as you continue toward hiring.
