Switching Careers? Here’s How to Build Your Network

How to Build Your NetworkThey have always said it isn’t what you know but who you know. This has never been more true than when you’re switching careers. The most successful career changers know that building your network is one of the most essential aspects of the new process of finding a job outside of your experience. How can you build your network the right way? Here are some ways you can look for connections anywhere, think outside of the box, and not give in to pressure from others.

Do your homework.

It is important that you fully understand the new field. Many career changers fall into the trap of applying for anything that is different from their last role, but this means they are unprepared for all eventualities. Instead, focus on where you want to go and do your homework to help you get there. When making that switch, take your strengths and see how they can make you marketable to a new industry.

Tell everyone.

When you’re in line at the bank, strike up a conversation. Talk to your dentist, your grocer, or anyone you come in contact with on a daily basis. When you’re out on the town, talk to people around you. You never know who might know someone in this new field. Look for connections everywhere. This outgoing behavior also will help with small talk when you need it in a professional setting.

Pick a mentor.

When you were at the dawn of your original career, you were probably told to find a mentor to help you along the way. The same wisdom is true for your new career even though you may be in a different phase of your life. In today’s age, you don’t even have to live in the same town. Find someone who has made this switch or a previous contact who works in your desired industry and connect with them.

Attend industry events.

Even if you haven’t started working in your new industry, it is never too early to meet others face to face. Look up industry events, seminars, and conferences happening near you. The more people you meet the better chance you have of a successful transition in your career.

Leverage social media.

Lastly, in this modern age of information don’t forget to leverage social media. LinkedIn is the best place to start for professional contacts but even Facebook and Twitter have their place. Join groups and chats to make connections that can help you. Don’t have the mindset of “What’s in it for me?” If you think about helping others, you will get more help for yourself in the long run.
