Ways To Create An Engaging And Beneficial Employee Training Program

Employee TrainingIs your corporate New Year’s resolution to create a better training program for your new hires? Many new hires that leave a job before the first 90 days cite poor training and onboarding programs for their dissatisfaction with a job. You can strengthen your company’s training program with a few easy steps and cultivate an environment that will make new hires want to stay and contribute to your organization for the long term. Here are a few ways to create a good employee training program.

  • Teach to their work styles and have fun. Before you even start, determine how the new candidate learns best. They may learn by doing or by observing and taking notes. Whatever the case, use techniques that will work best for each person you’re training. This doesn’t mean you have to re-write the entire program, but make it flexible enough to be customized. And, don’t forget to have fun. No one learns well if they aren’t enjoying it.
  • Teach about the company culture. Learning to do the job is probably the easy part. You’ve hired someone with experience so it shouldn’t take them long to pick up the way you want things done in your company. What is harder to learn is a company culture. So spend some time focusing on the company mission, the environment, and the best ways to work with the existing team.
  • Provide regular feedback. If dissatisfied employees are likely to leave before their first 90 days, waiting to provide a formal review won’t be effective. Instead, be sure to provide feedback along the way. Correct behaviors that need to be corrected but also don’t forget to provide positive reinforcement for good work. This will actually be more effective than negative feedback. Let them know what they are doing right and encourage them to continue.
  • Ask for feedback in return. Also, make sure that your new employee understands that you are open for communications. Ask them how they feel about their training so far, if they have any questions, and how you’re doing specifically. This will create a long term culture of trust and communications.
