3 Tips for Improved Onboarding

When a new employee starts with your company it is important to do all that you can to ensure their success. The cost of continuously hiring for the same job is more than just the advertising and the resume reviews, there will be a loss of productivity as you begin the interviewing process again as well as a hit to the morale of your current team. To avoid this kind of hiring nightmare, focus on your onboarding process to give your new employee all of the right keys to success in your business. Here are three tips to improved onboarding for your company.

  1. Assign a mentor. Talk with your current team members and select a trusted employee to show the new associate the ropes around the office. This should encompass not only the job duties and functions but also the corporate culture, the office layout, and how to succeed in the environment. This can give the new employee an advantage and help integrate them into the staff quickly. It will also show the senior staff how much you value their contributions to the company as well.
  2. Offer new and challenging projects. Sometimes employees fail because they don’t feel as though they are being challenged within their role. Of course, the essentials for the job should be a priority but trust your new employee with additional projects to learn what they enjoy and how they excel. Tapping into your new staff member’s additional talents can be a great way to promote innovation.
  3. Provide constant feedback. All too often managers wait until the 90 day review to discuss employee performance. If they do offer feedback prior to that formal meeting it is often in the form of correction rather than praise. Don’t wait. Talk to your new team member about how they can improve and, more importantly, how well they are performing their job. Acknowledging their accomplishments is more important for employee success than pointing out their flaws.
