How to Improve Employee Output

It is the responsibility of a good manager to ensure their employees remain motivated. You certainly want to hire people with a passion for their jobs, but sometimes the game needs to be changed and things need to be kept fresh. Here are some creative ideas you can use to help improve your employee output.

  • What if you were CEO? If you were promoted to CEO, what changes would you make? This gives your employees a chance to express their ideas as well as things they would improve given the chance. Then pay attention to the feedback you get. What do the employees want to see in the company? What things do they miss that have changed? What policies do they not like?
  • Eliminate what doesn’t work. Once you begin to listen to what your employees say about the work environment or the things they don’t like, it is time to make improvements. What if too many of your employees feel their commute has become a burden? Consider allowing individuals to work from home at least part of the time. Create real solutions to perceived problems.
  • Don’t be afraid of being weird. Varity is the spice of life. Depending on the personalities in your company consider doing things completely off the wall from time to time. Organize an office wide flash mob. Hire a singing telegram.  Have theme days where you encourage your employees to dress up like Funny Hat Day or Favorite Sports Team Day. This can really get the creative juices flowing.
  • Naps. This may sound like the strangest thing anyone has ever suggested about managing employees, but offering a space and some time for employees to catch a 15 minute cat nap can significantly increase their performance. Everyone’s energy dips in the early afternoon right after lunch so don’t force them to continue the afternoon feeling stressed. You’ll notice they are more relaxed and they stop watching the clock for quitting time.
  • Offer Mentorships. Pair employees up with each other. Does someone have a skill that another employee would like to cultivate? Is there someone in the office with a lot more experience than a newer person? Encourage them to work with each other without fostering a sense of competition or feeling that the more experienced person will lose their job to the newcomer. If managed property, a mentor program can help promote positive teamwork.
