Why Resumes and Cover Letters Still Matter

Let’s face it, technology has become an integral part of the hiring process. More and more candidates are finding new career opportunities on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. But, have the old “brick and mortar” standbys, the resume and cover letter, become obsolete as social media takes over?

Old Fashioned Resumes and Cover Letters Still Make a Difference!

There is no doubt that social media adds a new element to career searchings and hiring processes; however, the tried and true method of applying for a job  – submitting a resume and cover letter, still has a great deal of value, because:

1. They show a personal investment.
Taking the time to choose high-quality paper, draft your resume and cover letter, sign it, and send to an employer shows a true interest and investment in the role. This could demonstrate a great eye for detail from a future employee,  and shows a true investment in your job opening – not just a mass email of someone’s profile.

2. Social media profiles sometimes give away too much information.
And that includes information that is protected under Federal law. Some employers are choosing to avoid social media profiles during the hiring process altogether, to avoid exposing their companies to potential liabilities.

3. They aren’t easy to pass along.
Many employers still like to have a print out of a candidate’s resume or cover letter and distribute to other team members. Have you ever tried printing a Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn profile? It isn’t pretty!

4. They are antiquated.
Yes, that’s a benefit! Many employers still like to do things the old-fashioned way, and have no interest in digging up profiles on social media sites. Believe it or not, for these employers, you’re making it easier on them by providing a resume and cover letter.

Although a great many employers still prefer receiving a traditional cover letter and resume, hiring trends show that social media is quickly becoming a crucial component for many employers. So, while you don’t want to toss that resume and cover letter just yet, be sure to establish a professional social media presence, so that all employers have the opportunity to see what sets you apart from the competition!
