Don’t Be Overlooked: Tips to Stand Out in an Interview if You’re Unemployed

In today’s economy, many talented professionals across the Dallas / Fort Worth market have had instances of unemployment. As things continue to improve; however, and you gain job interview opportunities, it’s important to stand out, and not have any periods of unemployment bar you from gaining a new position.

Don’t be overlooked!
Here are ways to take a positive spin on periods of unemployment:

  • Volunteer. You may not have full-time employment, but you can still keep your skills sharp (and expand your professional network!) by volunteering in the community. Do you have a background in marketing? Finance? Human services? Or maybe you’re just looking to help out in your neighborhood. Many non-profit organizations need help from professional volunteers. Volunteer work will help you fill gaps in your resume, and gain valuable experience while you are seeking full-time employment.
  • Take classes. Unemployment can be extremely frustrating – no one wants to be out of work! But as you continue searching for your next career opportunity, keep sharpening your skills and stay up to date by taking some classes. Whether in a community center or at your local college, taking classes in your area of expertise will demonstrate to potential employers that you are serious about advancing your career, and that you are the type of employee who makes lemonade out of lemons – you’re taking initiative to make yourself better, after all!
  • Seek temporary employment opportunities. Are you seeing a trend here? Don’t be afraid to turn down opportunities to grow and advance because you’re looking for full-time employment. Temporary career opportunities offer additional ways to expand your professional network – and they can sometimes result in full-time job offers!
